Using the monitor creator
Contents of this article
Overview
The monitor creator brings every way of adding monitors into one place. Click Start monitoring on your dashboard, then choose a tab at the top:
Tab | Use it to |
Discovery | Let AI suggest pages worth monitoring, based on what you want to track |
Single | Set up one monitor for a page you already know |
Bulk | Add many pages at once from a list |
Each tab keeps its own settings, so you can switch between tabs without losing your work.
Discovery: find pages to monitor
Not sure which pages to monitor? Discovery searches the web and suggests pages that match what you want to track.
Step 1:
Review the suggested pages
When you open Discovery, it suggests pages straight away, based on the monitors already in your workspace and the use case you chose when you signed up. These first suggestions are already selected. Untick any you don't want.
Step 2 (optional):
Search for more pages
Under Search the web for pages to monitor, describe what you want to track, for example "competitor pricing pages for project management tools", or pick one of the examples. Then click the arrow button. After a few seconds, you'll see up to 5 suggested pages, each with a title, a short reason it was suggested, and a preview image.
Search results are already selected. Untick any you don't want.
Each new search replaces the list. If you search for something else, the new results replace the previous ones, so finish selecting pages from one search before starting another.
Find more pages adds more suggestions to the current list. These aren't selected, so tick the ones you want.
Step 3:
Check your selection and start monitoring
Check which pages are ticked, then click Start monitoring N pages.
Good to know:
Discovery is available on all plans.
Searching doesn't use any of your checks. Checks are only used once the monitors you create start running.
Pages you're already actively monitoring in the workspace aren't suggested again.
Pages that can't be loaded are left out of the suggestions.
You can run up to 30 searches every 10 minutes.
Your search history is only kept while the creator is open.
To tailor suggestions, Discovery uses your email domain, your sign-up use case, and your workspace's most recent monitors.
Single: monitor one page
Step 1:
Enter the page URL
Paste the URL of the page you want to monitor.
Step 2:
Describe the changes that matter
In the Alert me when field, describe the changes you want to be alerted about. The sidebar shows which alert condition is currently in use. See Making a Strong Prompt for Important Alerts for tips.
Step 3:
Choose a frequency and start monitoring
Select how often Visualping should check the page, then click Start monitoring.
For more detail on each setting, see How to create a basic monitoring job.
Bulk: monitor many pages at once
Step 1:
Add your pages
Paste your pages into the list. Each row has a Page address and a Title. You can paste two columns straight from a spreadsheet, with URLs in the first column and titles in the second. If you leave a title blank, Visualping fills it in from the page. You can edit any row in place or remove it.
Step 2:
Check for invalid or duplicate pages
Rows with an invalid URL are marked so you can fix them. Rows highlighted in orange are duplicates, either because the page is already monitored in this workspace or because it appears more than once in your list. Click Clear all to remove them. Duplicates are a warning only: if you leave them in, they'll be created as separate monitors.
Step 3:
Choose your settings and start monitoring
Choose the settings for all the pages, such as frequency and AI prompt, then click Start monitoring N pages. Every page in the list is monitored as a full page.
Good to know:
The Bulk tab is available on all plans.
You can choose any check frequency your plan allows. See Available frequencies by plan.
You can't add more pages than your plan's limit of active monitors. If your list goes over it, you'll see a warning with an option to upgrade.
To change settings for many monitors after they're created, use bulk editing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Bulk import button still on my dashboard?
For now, yes. The Bulk import button is still available, and the Bulk tab in the monitor creator does the same job. The Bulk import button is planned to be removed in the future, so we recommend using the Bulk tab. See How do I import jobs in bulk? for the Bulk import steps.
Why don't I see any suggestions when I open Discovery?
Automatic suggestions are based on your existing monitors and your sign-up use case. If your workspace has no active monitors yet, type what you want to track into the search field instead.
Does Discovery use my checks?
No. Searching and previewing suggested pages is free. Checks are only used by the monitors you create, once they start running.
A suggested page doesn't look right in its preview. What should I do?
Some websites block automated visits or show a security check. If a preview looks wrong, untick the page, or create the monitor and adjust its settings afterwards. See Is it possible to avoid Captcha?
I'm having issues, what can I do?
Reach out to our Support team at support@visualping.io. Include which tab you were using, the pages involved, and any error messages so we can help faster.
